FOREWORD BY ROBERT THURMAN

Robert Thurman visiting with the Dalai Lama.

Robert A.F. Thurman is who the New York Times Magazine refers to as the “Dalai Lama’s man in America.” A scholar, author, former Tibetan Buddhist Monk, co-founder with Richard Gere of Tibet House in New York City, a close personal friend of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and father of five children including the actress, Uma Thurman, he is the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. Time magazine named him one the “25 Most Influential Americans.” He has lectured all over the world; his charisma and enthusiasm draw packed audiences.

I first met Dr. Thurman when I brought him to Nashville so speak at Symposium 2000, a 16-day peace event conceived and produced by Tennessee Players, sponsored by Vanderbilt University.

In 2005 I visited with Thurman at Columbia where he recorded for Tennessee Players’ CD: Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach. That same year, Thurman spoke the words at a presentation of the acclaimed Multimedia Musical Dramatization in New York City, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

“Your small chapters are extremely interesting to read – and I do hope you continue to write – at least until you are 100!  Your stories must interest a lot of people – both people who have experienced the time you refer to – and also the younger ones – regarding the stories as  history. I am reading your earlier stories on the GRIT homepage – and though the txt is the same, there’s a lot of difference – adding all the relevant pictures.” - Bent Munk Oelson, Senior Advisor, Norway
